Raised beds are very popular for a number of reasons. One of those reasons is that no double digging is required during bed preparation. Wooden raised beds can easily be constructed from landscape timbers. Then the beds are filled with soil that can be purchased from any garden center. This really cuts down on the amount of labor to get a garden ready for planting. Besides constructing the raised beds from landscape timbers there are kits available for homeowners to make the construction even faster and easier.

One of these kits is the Urban Garden that can be found online. They are made of white cedar and are easy to assemble and very attractive in the landscape. It is a tiered, raised bed garden that also saves space as up to 54 plants can be planted in an area that is not much larger than 4′ x 4 ‘. This many plants get maximum vegetable production in a very small space which allows for a lot more families to produce their own plants. The Urban Garden raised bed is also an ideal place to grow herbs. Its height makes harvesting easy as well. Because it’s has a compact shape, placement near a sidewalk or patio is logical. It’s a great addition to any garden because it can be used close to the house or even on a patio.

A couple of years ago I was looking for a cheap greenhouse to get some seedlings going and ready to plant before putting them into the ground. I found and bought the Garden Greenhouse 6 x 10 and it has worked like a charm for two seasons and I suspect it will hold up for my seedlings a few more years as well.

However, that old saying about getting what you pay for is correct; this greenhouse is not something I could grow anything in during the winter months. So I just purchased a Rion 8 x 12 Hobby Greenhouse in order to grow lettuces and herbs this year and work into some other plants that the family loves fresh in the future. While I would have loved to get a larger one, we are somewhat limited by space and this one fits in the space we have. It took me and my son a bit longer than the allotted time listed on the website but once we got going and figured it out it went up rather quickly. It’s very different than the seedling greenhouse but we use them for different functions and believe we are going to be rewarded accordingly.

One of the most affordable and exotic looking indoor bonsai trees is the European Fig, or the ficus rianne. This indoor bonsai is somewhat different from other bonsai trees, mainly because of its unique looking leaves and bark. The European fig, despite its name, is actually native to Northern Australia and India. Its bark is very smooth and has a tan color to it, while its leaves are narrow, thin, and are glossy green color. While the trunk is a bit different from other bonsai, it grows very crooked and splits into many multiple branches, making it an ideal tree to grow as a bonsai.

Remember that indoor bonsai trees need some extra care and attention. With outdoor bonsai, all you really need to do is make certain they’re sheltered from the elements. They can collect water on their own when it rains, and they often get a good amount of sunlight. With indoor bonsai, you are responsible for all of their watering needs, and you’ve got to remember to either put them in a well-lit area or remember to open the curtains or blinds each day. Fertilizing them is also a good idea since they may not get as much nutrient in their potting soil as outdoor bonsai.

Persian Area Rugs: Designs, Colors, and one of the First Creators of the Oriental rug. When it comes to Oriental rugs, the first country you can ever think of will be China. And then Persia for it’s wonderful rug weaving abilities that have been honed for centuries. They have expressed their culture, tradition, and art by creating different kinds of area rugs. Some of them were displayed in their homes, while others became part of their floors. Today, the Persian hand-knotted red rug is nice as many seek the reds in the Oriental rugs. These floor coverings are commonplace not only in traditional homes, but also in restaurants and offices that want to increase their overall interior design

Oriental Rugs and Persian carpets are very beautiful and narrative, compared to other kinds of area rugs that are being sold. The designs usually depict common Persian symbols that tell something about the history of the place in a specific period. This practice, moreover, has been around for several years, even until now. These patterns can be applied to the entire fabric or placed at the center. Of course, the former is more elaborate than the latter.

What is that bird at your copper birdbath? If you live up in the high mountains, it may be a Brown-capped Rosy-Finch. These birds are, however, fairly rare.

You’ll only see one at your bird feeder if you live in Colorado. In fact, the Brown-capped Rosy-Finch has the smallest living area of all three American Finch species. They generally live and breed up above the timberline at the highest part of the mountains. The male Brown-capped Rosy-Finch is a medium-sized finch that has cinnamon colors on its breast, face, neck, and back. Its forehead is black, and it features some pink and red on the rump, belly, and in its wings.

Brown-capped Rosy-Finches build their nests in crevices and niches where they are kept completely in the shade. The female builds the nest completely on her own, and it usually takes her about three days to complete it. They line the nest with fur, feathers, and even loose grass. Some nests have even been found with bits of cloth and other materials in them, although since the Brown-capped Rosy-Finch lives so far up in the mountains, this is rare.

I realized this morning that spring is finally making its appearance – and why not it’s almost April! Aside from the snow melting, which is the first of the don’t miss indicators, I realized this morning when I was lying in bed listening to the birds that I was actually able to hear them because the bedroom window stayed open for the whole night. It’s so nice to be able to sleep without breathing nothing more than stale, dry, heated, recycled air. Even though I have quite a few new chores added to the list with the changing of the season, I really don’t mind because one of the first will be to go into the garage and haul out my Aqua Colored Ceramic Bird bath.

Of all the ceramic bird baths I’ve seen I still think this one is my favorite. The pale aqua coloring doesn’t really add what you would call a splash of color my garden, frankly when I set a ceramic bird bath near the annual flower bed, a splash of color just isn’t necessary. What it does though is add a new tone to the backdrop and sets off the colors in my garden, which I think is a much better backyard idea. And of course the best garden gift is the birds that open water always seems to attract. Last spring I actually had orioles drinking from my birdbath and that was a terrific Mother’s Day gift from Mother Nature to me – aided and abetted by my family who gave me this garden gift last year.

Born in Austria in 1862, Gustav Klimt was among the most important artists of the Austrian Art Nouveau movement. The Kiss (1907-1908) is possibly his best-known work. It was painted during his Golden Phase, a period during which his works were distinguished by the prominent use of gold-leaf. It is thought that the famous mosaics of Venice and Ravenna inspired this technique. The original hangs in the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna but you can own The Kiss Tapestry as a woven art work. As in the original masterpiece, Tapestry Art, The Kiss depicts a couple poised together on a flowered slope. As they share a kiss, their selves appear to merge. Mirroring Klimt’s gold-leaf technique, the tapestry has been embellished with golden threads.

You can purchase this stunning work from Decor4u.com in their Tapestry Shop in the by Famous Artists section. Woven of 100% cotton, the tapestry accommodates a tapestry rod and is offered in two sizes: 32 inches wide by 53 inches high or 53 inches wide by 87 inches high. Professional dry clean.

Carpeting on the stairs serves a variety of purposes. The most obvious is it’s decorative value, adding color and elegance to what is often the first impression your visitors will have of your home. It also helps to keep noise to a minimum since the sound of shoes marching up bare wooden steps tends to echo throughout the house. Carpet for stairs serves to dampen the sound whilst providing comfort under foot. It’s final, and perhaps, most important function is to increase grip and thus, safety by helping to prevent slipping and falling. This will only be achieved of course with the correct installation. Specialist padding will also help.

Carpeting cut from a roll can easily be bought so that is long enough to continue into the hallway and you can achieve a similar affect even if you use a runner on your stairs. You can continue the theme by buying an additional carpet runner to lay in your hallway. As mentioned above, make sure it is fitted properly so that it will not move or trip people up when they walk over it.

Old homes are a painting challenge because of the potential need for plaster repair. Drywall mud can be sculpted to the contours of an old ceiling or wall, but it should be laid on a little at a time so it doesn’t shrink too much when it dries. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth when you finish putting on the mud. You can always sand it off. You must prime your repairs before painting.

Another painting challenge in an old home is old wallpaper. This all needs to be scraped off. There are gadgets that can be used to score the wallpaper so a solution of vinegar and water can soak in, but really the only thing that removes five layers of wall paper covering the original 80 year old layer is elbow grease.
